Why You’ll Love This Air Fryer Peach Crisp

This Air Fryer Peach Crisp isn’t just another dessert; it’s a testament to convenience and deliciousness. Here’s why it’s poised to become your new favorite:

  • No Oven Required: Say goodbye to heating up your entire kitchen, especially during warm summer months. The air fryer provides a compact, efficient cooking environment that keeps your home cool while delivering exceptional results.
  • Lightning-Fast Cooking: Compared to a traditional oven, the air fryer significantly cuts down on cooking time. Its rapid preheating and powerful convection circulation mean you can have a warm, bubbly peach crisp ready in about 20 minutes, making it ideal for spontaneous cravings or last-minute dessert needs.
  • Simple, Accessible Ingredients: You’ll appreciate that this recipe relies on everyday pantry staples and fresh peaches, making it easy to whip up without a special trip to the grocery store.
  • Incredibly Versatile: While peaches are the star, this recipe is incredibly adaptable. Don’t have peaches? No problem! You can easily swap them out for other fruits you have on hand, such as apples, berries, or mixed fruit, adjusting sugar and cornstarch as needed.
  • Perfectly Crispy Topping: The air fryer excels at creating that signature golden, crunchy streusel topping that defines a great crisp. The concentrated heat ensures a beautifully crisp texture every time.

Key Ingredients for the Perfect Crisp

A stellar dessert begins with quality ingredients. Here’s a closer look at what you’ll need for this Air Fryer Peach Crisp and how each component contributes to its irresistible charm:

Ingredients needed for Air Fryer Peach Crisp laid out on a table
  • Peaches: For the best results, aim for **fresh, ripe, yet firm peaches**. This balance ensures they soften beautifully without becoming overly mushy, releasing just the right amount of sweet juice to mingle with the topping. Super-ripe or excessively juicy peaches can lead to a watery crisp, so if you’re using them, be prepared to adjust the cornstarch. If fresh peaches are out of season, you can absolutely use canned or frozen peaches; just be sure to drain them thoroughly (see expert tips below for more).
  • Oats: The choice between quick oats and old-fashioned rolled oats impacts the topping’s texture. **Quick oats** will yield a slightly more delicate and uniform crisp, while **old-fashioned rolled oats** will provide a heartier, chewier texture with more pronounced crispness. Both work wonderfully, so choose based on your preference.
  • Almonds (or other nuts): Sliced almonds are included for an added layer of flavor and a delightful crunch that complements the soft peaches and crisp oats. Feel free to experiment with other nuts like pecans or walnuts, or omit them entirely if you have allergies or prefer a nut-free version.
  • Sugar: This recipe calls for a blend of **brown sugar** for its molasses-rich depth in the peach filling and **white granulated sugar** for a clean sweetness and optimal crisping in the topping. If your peaches are exceptionally sweet, you might reduce the brown sugar in the filling, but it’s generally best to keep the topping sugar as specified for the desired texture.
  • Cornstarch: This crucial ingredient acts as a thickening agent, preventing the peach filling from becoming too runny. Peaches naturally release liquid as they cook, and cornstarch helps create a luscious, syrupy consistency. Depending on how juicy your peaches are, you might need to add an extra tablespoon or two. Be cautious not to add too much, as it can result in an unpleasantly gummy texture.
  • All-Purpose Flour: Forms the base of your streusel topping, binding the oats and butter together to create that signature crumble.
  • Cinnamon: A warm, aromatic spice that beautifully enhances the natural sweetness of the peaches and adds depth to the crisp topping.
  • Salt: Just a pinch of salt is essential to balance the sweetness and elevate all the other flavors in both the filling and the topping.
  • Unsalted Butter: The cold butter, cut into cubes, is worked into the dry topping ingredients to create distinct crumbs, which melt and crisp up during baking, contributing to the rich flavor and texture.
  • Vanilla Extract: A splash of vanilla extract in the peach filling amplifies the sweet, fruity notes and adds a comforting warmth.

Step-by-Step Guide: Crafting Your Air Fryer Peach Crisp

Preparing this peach crisp in your Air Fryer is incredibly straightforward. Follow these simple steps to create a warm, bubbly dessert that’s ready in no time:

Four images showing the steps for making an Air Fryer Peach Crisp: ingredients, mixing topping, assembling, and cooking
  1. Prepare Your Equipment: Start by lightly greasing your baking dish. Choose an oven-safe dish that fits comfortably into your Air Fryer basket, allowing air to circulate around it. Preheat your Air Fryer to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) while you prepare the ingredients.
  2. Assemble the Peach Filling: In a medium-sized bowl, combine the sliced peaches with brown sugar, cornstarch, and vanilla extract. Toss gently until the peach slices are evenly coated. The cornstarch will help thicken the juices as they cook, creating a delightful, syrupy filling. Spoon this mixture evenly into your prepared baking dish.
  3. Craft the Crunchy Topping: In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, oats (quick or old-fashioned), granulated sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Now, add the cubed, softened unsalted butter. Using your fingertips, a pastry cutter, or a fork, work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. This creates the signature streusel texture. Evenly sprinkle this crumbly topping over the peach filling in the baking dish. If using, scatter the sliced almonds or crushed walnuts over the streusel for extra crunch and flavor.
  4. Air Fry to Perfection: Carefully place the baking dish into your preheated Air Fryer basket. Air fry for approximately 20 minutes. Keep an eye on the crisp during the last few minutes; the topping should turn golden brown and become deliciously crisp, and the peach filling should be bubbly around the edges. If you notice the topping browning too quickly, you can loosely cover it with aluminum foil for the remaining cook time.
  5. Cool and Serve: Once cooked, carefully remove the hot baking dish from the Air Fryer. Allow the peach crisp to rest for about 5 minutes before serving. This resting period allows the filling to set slightly and prevents it from being too runny. Serve warm, ideally with a scoop of cold vanilla ice cream or a dollop of fresh whipped cream.

Expert Tips for Air Fryer Peach Crisp Success

Mastering your Air Fryer Peach Crisp is easy with a few insider tricks. Here’s how to ensure your dessert turns out perfectly every time:

  • To Peel or Not to Peel: While peeling peaches is optional, some prefer it for a smoother texture. If you decide to peel, the easiest method is blanching: briefly dip peaches in boiling water for 30-60 seconds, then immediately transfer them to an ice bath. The skins will slip right off. For more detailed instructions, check out my Peach Cobbler recipe.
  • Oat Selection Matters: You can use either quick oats or old-fashioned rolled oats for the topping. Quick oats will result in a more tender and finely textured crumble, whereas old-fashioned oats will give you a heartier, chewier, and distinctly crispier topping. Both are delicious, so pick your favorite!
  • Choose Ripe Peaches Wisely: For the most flavorful and tender filling, always opt for ripe peaches. They are naturally sweeter and have a softer texture that’s easier to slice and bakes down beautifully. However, ensure they are still somewhat firm to avoid an overly mushy filling.
  • Adjust Cornstarch for Juiciness: Peaches vary greatly in juiciness. If your peaches are exceptionally ripe or particularly juicy, increase the cornstarch amount by 1 to 2 tablespoons to prevent a watery crisp. Conversely, if your fruit seems drier, you might use slightly less.
  • Don’t Forget to Grease: Always grease your baking dish thoroughly with butter or cooking spray. This prevents the peach crisp from sticking and makes for easy serving and cleanup.
  • Preheating is Key: Preheating your Air Fryer for a few minutes before adding the crisp ensures an even cook and a perfectly crisp topping from the start. Cold air fryers can lead to uneven baking.
  • Right Dish, Right Fit: Select a baking dish that fits comfortably into your Air Fryer basket. It’s crucial that there’s enough space around the dish for air to circulate freely. If you have a smaller Air Fryer, consider baking the recipe in batches using smaller ramekins or halving the recipe.
  • Prevent Over-Browning: If the streusel topping starts to get too dark before the peaches are tender and bubbly, you can loosely cover the dish with a piece of aluminum foil for the remainder of the cooking time.
  • Gluten-Free Option: To make this Air Fryer Peach Crisp gluten-free, simply substitute the all-purpose flour with a certified gluten-free 1-to-1 all-purpose flour blend. Additionally, ensure that your oats are certified gluten-free, as some oats can be cross-contaminated during processing.
  • Using Canned or Frozen Peaches: If fresh peaches aren’t available, canned or frozen varieties work well. For canned peaches, drain them exceptionally well to avoid excess moisture. For frozen peaches, thaw them completely and then drain off any accumulated liquid before using them in the recipe. Adjust sugar slightly if using peaches canned in syrup.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the difference between a crisp, a cobbler, and a crumble?

Crisps, cobblers, and crumbles are all delightful baked desserts featuring fresh fruit topped with some form of pastry. Cobblers are distinguished by their biscuit-like topping. Crumbles and crisps are quite similar, both typically featuring a streusel topping, but crisps are traditionally made with oats in their topping, providing a distinct texture.

Can I make peach crisp with canned peaches?

Yes, you can absolutely use canned peaches. The key is to drain them very well before incorporating them into the recipe to prevent a soggy filling. If the peaches were canned in a sweet syrup, you might consider reducing the amount of brown sugar in the fruit filling slightly.

Can I use different fruit in this recipe?

Absolutely! This recipe is wonderfully versatile. You can substitute peaches with apples, berries, mixed berries, or even cherries. Keep in mind that different fruits have varying levels of sweetness and release more or less juice. You may need to adjust the sugar and cornstarch quantities accordingly to achieve the perfect balance and consistency.

Can you use frozen peaches instead of fresh ones?

Yes, frozen peaches are a great alternative when fresh ones are not in season. For best results, thaw the frozen peaches completely and drain off any excess liquid before adding them to the recipe. This prevents the crisp from becoming watery.

Can I make this recipe dairy-free or nut-free?

Yes, for a dairy-free version, substitute the butter with a plant-based butter alternative. For a nut-free crisp, simply omit the sliced almonds or any other nuts from the topping. The crisp will still be incredibly delicious!

Can I prepare Air Fryer Peach Crisp ahead of time?

You can prepare the peach filling and the streusel topping separately a day in advance and store them in the refrigerator. Assemble and bake just before serving for the freshest taste and best crisp texture. Baking it entirely ahead of time might soften the topping.

What to Serve with a Peach Crisp

The warm, comforting flavors of peach crisp are elevated when paired with the right accompaniments. The classic combination of warm, juicy fruit, crunchy streusel, and a cold, creamy element is truly divine:

  • Vanilla Ice Cream: This is arguably the most iconic pairing. The contrast between the warm, sweet crisp and cold, rich vanilla ice cream is simply heavenly. The melting ice cream creates a luscious sauce that perfectly blends with the peach juices.
  • Homemade Whipped Cream: A dollop of light, airy whipped cream adds a touch of elegance and a lovely creamy texture without being too heavy. A hint of vanilla or a pinch of cinnamon in the whipped cream can further enhance the flavors.
  • Custard or Crème Anglaise: For a more sophisticated touch, a pour of warm vanilla custard or a delicate crème anglaise provides a silky smooth counterpoint to the crisp’s texture.
  • Greek Yogurt: For a slightly healthier or breakfast-friendly option, a spoonful of plain or vanilla Greek yogurt offers a tangy creaminess that balances the sweetness of the peaches beautifully.
  • Caramel Sauce: A drizzle of homemade or store-bought caramel sauce can add an extra layer of decadence, complementing the caramelized peaches perfectly.

The interplay of textures and temperatures makes these pairings so DELICIOUS! Don’t hesitate to experiment and find your favorite combination.

Leftovers and Storage

Enjoying leftover Air Fryer Peach Crisp is just as delightful as the first serving. Here’s how to store it and keep it fresh:

  • Refrigeration: Any leftover peach crisp should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It will keep well for up to 4 days, though the topping may lose some of its crispness over time.
  • Reheating: To reheat and restore that lovely crunchy topping, place individual servings back into your Air Fryer. Air fry at 350°F (175°C) for 5-10 minutes, or until warmed through and the topping is crisp once more. Alternatively, you can reheat it in a conventional oven at the same temperature.

Freezing Instructions

This Air Fryer Peach Crisp is fantastic for making ahead and freezing, either baked or unbaked. This makes it a perfect dessert to have on hand for impromptu gatherings or a quick weeknight treat.

  • To Freeze Baked Crisp:
    1. Allow the crisp to cool completely to room temperature after baking.
    2. Cover it tightly with plastic wrap and then a layer of aluminum foil, or transfer it to a freezer-safe container with a lid.
    3. Freeze for up to 3 months.
    4. To thaw, let it sit at room temperature for several hours or overnight in the refrigerator. Reheat in your Air Fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 5-10 minutes, or until warmed through and the topping is crispy.
  • To Freeze Unbaked Crisp:

You can freeze the crisp fully assembled in its baking dish, or freeze the peach filling and topping separately.

    1. Assembled: Prepare the crisp as directed, but do not bake. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and then foil. Freeze for up to 3 months.
    2. Separated: Store the peach filling in an airtight container and the streusel topping in a separate freezer bag or container. This allows for flexible assembly later. Freeze for up to 3 months.
    3. Baking from Frozen (Assembled): When ready to bake, place the frozen, unbaked crisp (covered with foil to prevent the topping from burning) into your Air Fryer. Air fry at 300°F (150°C) for about 20 minutes. Then, remove the foil, increase the temperature to 350°F (175°C), and continue to air fry for another 10-20 minutes, or until the topping is golden and crisp, and the peaches are bubbly and tender.
