Essential Ingredients for Perfect Air Fryer Chicken Tenders
Crafting the perfect air fryer chicken tenders starts with selecting the right ingredients. Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll need and why each component is crucial for achieving that mouthwatering crispiness and tender juiciness. Exact quantities can be found in the detailed recipe card below.
- Chicken Tenders: Opting for pre-cut chicken tenders is the ultimate convenience. These lean, boneless, skinless strips are ideal for quick cooking and consistent results. If pre-cut aren’t available, you can easily prepare your own by slicing boneless, skinless chicken breasts lengthwise into approximately ½-inch thick strips. The key is uniformity for even cooking.
- Buttermilk: This unsung hero of fried chicken is essential for both flavor and texture. Buttermilk acts as a gentle tenderizer, breaking down the chicken fibers to ensure incredibly moist and succulent results. Its slight acidity also helps the breadcrumb coating adhere beautifully to the chicken, creating a more robust crust. Don’t have any on hand? No problem – learn how to make your own substitute below!
- Panko Breadcrumbs: For unparalleled crispiness, panko breadcrumbs are non-negotiable. Their larger, flakier structure provides a lighter, crunchier coating compared to regular breadcrumbs. If panko isn’t an option, standard breadcrumbs can be used, but adjust your expectations for the final texture.
- All-Purpose Flour: The flour creates the foundational layer for our breading, helping the buttermilk adhere and providing a base for the panko. It ensures a complete and even coating that crisps up beautifully in the air fryer.
- Baking Powder: A secret weapon for extra crispiness! A small amount of baking powder reacts with the moisture and heat, creating tiny air bubbles that expand and contribute to a light, airy, and ultra-crispy crust.
- Salt and Freshly Ground Black Pepper: These fundamental seasonings enhance the natural flavor of the chicken and the breading. While any black pepper works, freshly ground offers a more pungent aroma and bolder taste. For those who enjoy a bit more spice, white pepper is an excellent alternative.
- Paprika: Adding a touch of paprika contributes a subtle, sweet, and mild peppery flavor, as well as a beautiful golden hue to the breading, making your tenders even more visually appealing.
- Garlic Powder: Garlic powder introduces a savory depth that balances the overall flavor profile. It’s a fantastic aromatic, but if you’re not a fan, feel free to omit it.
- Melted Unsalted Butter or Oil Spray: Brushing the tenders with melted butter before and during air frying is key to achieving that rich, golden-brown color and enhanced flavor. Unsalted butter allows you to control the overall saltiness of the dish. For a slightly lighter option, a generous spray of neutral-flavored oil, such as avocado or light olive oil, works wonderfully too.
Step-by-Step Guide: How to Make Air Fryer Chicken Tenders
Achieving perfectly crispy and juicy air fryer chicken tenders is simple with these clear steps. Follow along to create a meal that will impress everyone at your table. For precise measurements, refer to the recipe card at the bottom of this page.
- Prepare the Chicken Marinade: Begin by placing your chicken tenders in a large resealable plastic bag. Pour the buttermilk over the chicken, ensuring each piece is well coated. Squeeze out as much air as possible from the bag before sealing it. Gently massage the bag to distribute the buttermilk evenly. Place the bag in the refrigerator and let the chicken marinate for a minimum of 15 minutes, or up to 30 minutes, to allow the buttermilk to tenderize the meat and infuse flavor.
- Create the Flavorful Breading: In a shallow bowl, whisk together the panko breadcrumbs, all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, freshly ground black pepper, paprika, and garlic powder until thoroughly combined. This mixture forms the crispy crust of your chicken tenders.
- Coat the Chicken: One by one, remove the chicken strips from the buttermilk using a fork, allowing any excess buttermilk to drip off. Immediately dredge each chicken tender in the prepared breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently to ensure a thick and even coating on all sides. Shake off any loose breading that doesn’t adhere. Place the coated tenders on a clean plate or wire rack while you prepare the remaining pieces.
- Preheat Your Air Fryer: If your air fryer model requires preheating, set it to 350°F (180°C) and let it warm up for 3-5 minutes. Preheating ensures consistent cooking temperature and helps achieve that desirable crispiness right from the start.
- Air Fry to Golden Perfection: Carefully arrange the breaded chicken tenders in a single layer within the air fryer basket. Avoid overcrowding; cook in batches if necessary to ensure optimal air circulation and crisping. Air fry for 10-12 minutes. After 4 minutes, pause the cooking cycle, open the basket, and generously brush the top side of each chicken tender with melted butter. Flip the tenders over and brush the other side with melted butter. Continue cooking until the chicken is golden brown, wonderfully crispy, and cooked through. The internal temperature should reach 175°F (79°C) when checked with an instant-read thermometer.
- Serve Immediately: Once cooked, transfer the hot and crispy air fryer chicken tenders to a serving platter. Serve them right away with your favorite dipping sauces for the best experience.

Expert Tips for the Best Air Fryer Chicken Tenders
Follow these insights to elevate your air fryer chicken tenders from good to absolutely phenomenal:
- Master the Marinade: Marinating chicken in buttermilk isn’t just about adding flavor; it’s crucial for tenderizing the meat. The easiest and most effective way to do this is to combine the chicken and buttermilk in a large resealable plastic bag. Press out all the air before sealing, allowing the chicken to be fully submerged and absorb the goodness. While 15-30 minutes is sufficient, you can marinate the chicken for up to 24 hours in the refrigerator for even more tender and flavorful results.
- Perfecting the Breading: For a consistently crispy crust, ensure you shake off any excess buttermilk from the chicken pieces before dredging them in the breading mixture. This prevents the coating from becoming gummy. Similarly, once coated, gently shake off any excess breading that isn’t firmly adhered to the tenders before placing them in the air fryer basket. Too much loose breading can fall off and burn.
- Strategic Air Frying: The golden rule of air frying is to avoid overcrowding the basket. Always arrange the breaded chicken tenders in a single layer. While a slight overlap might be acceptable for very small pieces, optimal crispiness comes from ample space around each tender for hot air to circulate. In my large Air Fryer, I can typically cook about 1 pound of chicken tenders at once. If you have a smaller air fryer, work in batches.
- The Importance of Oil/Butter: While the air fryer reduces the need for large amounts of oil, a little bit goes a long way for color and texture. Brushing the chicken tenders with melted butter (unsalted is best for flavor control) during cooking enhances browning and adds a rich flavor. For a dairy-free or lighter alternative, a pure oil spray like avocado oil or light olive oil will also help achieve a beautiful golden crust.
- Checking for Doneness: The most reliable way to ensure chicken is cooked through without becoming dry is to use an instant-read thermometer. Insert the thermometer into the thickest part of the tender; it should register an internal temperature of 175°F (79°C). Overcooking will lead to dry, tough chicken, so keep a close eye on it!
- Know Your Air Fryer: All air fryers are not created equal. Cooking times and temperatures can vary significantly between different models and brands. Always monitor your food closely, especially during the first few times you make this recipe, and adjust cooking duration as needed to achieve your desired crispiness and doneness.
- KFC-Inspired Seasoning Twist: For those who love the iconic flavor of KFC, you can easily replicate a similar spice profile. Simply combine 1/2 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp celery salt, 1/4 tsp dried oregano, 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (for a hint of heat), 1 tsp paprika, 1/4 tsp garlic powder, 1/4 tsp dried thyme, 1/2 tsp ground ginger, 1/2 tsp white pepper, and 1/2 tsp ground black pepper. This blend adds an incredible depth of flavor to your tenders.
- Handling Leftovers: Cooked air fryer chicken tenders can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To restore their crispiness, reheat them in the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for a few minutes until warmed through and re-crisped.
Recipe FAQs: All Your Air Fryer Chicken Tender Questions Answered
How long do you cook chicken tenders in the Air Fryer?
Chicken tenders cook very quickly in the air fryer due to their lean nature and smaller size. Typically, they will be perfectly cooked in about 10-12 minutes when air fried at 350°F (175°C). The exact time can vary depending on the thickness of your chicken strips and your specific air fryer model. Always ensure they reach an internal temperature of 175°F (79°C) and are no longer pink in the center. Be careful not to overcook them, as this can lead to dry, tough chicken!
What does buttermilk do for chicken?
Marinating chicken in buttermilk serves multiple crucial purposes that result in superior chicken tenders. Firstly, the mild acidity in buttermilk acts as a natural tenderizer, gently breaking down tough muscle fibers without making the chicken rubbery (unlike stronger acids like lemon juice). This process yields incredibly tender and moist meat. Secondly, buttermilk helps the breadcrumb mixture adhere more effectively to the chicken, creating a more uniform and robust coating that crisps up beautifully.
Can I make this recipe in a regular oven?
Absolutely! If you don’t have an air fryer, you can certainly bake these chicken tenders in a traditional oven. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Follow the recipe instructions for marinating and breading the chicken tenders. Once coated, place them in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 15-20 minutes, flipping them halfway through (after about 10 minutes) and brushing with melted butter on both sides to achieve a golden, crispy finish.
Can I use frozen chicken tenders?
While this recipe is optimized for fresh chicken tenders, you can adapt it for frozen ones. For best results, it’s recommended to thaw frozen tenders completely before marinating and breading. If cooking from frozen, skip the marinade, lightly coat the frozen tenders in breading, and air fry for a longer duration (around 15-20 minutes at 375°F/190°C), flipping halfway, until they are thoroughly cooked and crispy. Note that the texture might not be as tender as those marinated from fresh.
How do I make my air fryer chicken tenders extra crispy?
Several factors contribute to maximum crispiness:
- Panko Breadcrumbs: Always use panko for the crunchiest coating.
- Baking Powder: Don’t skip the baking powder in the breading mix.
- Preheat: Ensure your air fryer is fully preheated.
- Don’t Overcrowd: Cook in a single layer to allow hot air to circulate effectively.
- Brush with Fat: Brushing with melted butter or spraying with oil mid-cook helps with browning and crisping.
- Higher Heat Finish: For the last minute or two, you can increase the temperature slightly to 400°F (200°C) for an extra crispy boost, but watch carefully to prevent burning.

How to Make Chicken Tenders from Chicken Breast
If pre-packaged chicken tenders aren’t available at your local grocery store, don’t worry! It’s incredibly simple to create your own from boneless, skinless chicken breasts. Start by patting the chicken breast dry with a paper towel. Then, place the breast on a cutting board and carefully slice it lengthwise into uniform ½-inch thick strips. Aim for consistent thickness to ensure even cooking. These homemade strips will work perfectly in this recipe, yielding delicious, tender results every time.
How to Make Your Own Buttermilk Substitute
No buttermilk on hand? No problem at all! You can easily whip up a homemade substitute that works just as effectively for this recipe. Simply pour 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice or white vinegar into a liquid measuring cup. Then, fill the cup up to the 1-cup mark with regular milk (any percentage will do, but whole milk yields the richest result). Give the mixture a quick stir and let it sit for about 5 minutes. During this time, the milk will curdle slightly and thicken, mimicking the consistency and acidity of true buttermilk. You can then use this homemade substitute directly in your recipe.
What to Serve with Your Crispy Chicken Tenders
These versatile air fryer chicken tenders pair wonderfully with a variety of sides and sauces, making them perfect for any meal or occasion. For a classic fast-food experience made healthier, serve them alongside crispy Air Fryer French Fries or hearty Air Fryer Potato Wedges.
No chicken tender meal is complete without dipping sauces! Here are some of my favorite choices that perfectly complement the savory chicken:
- Ketchup: A timeless classic that kids and adults alike adore.
- Aioli Sauce: A creamy, garlic-infused mayonnaise that adds a sophisticated touch.
- Sweet and Sour Sauce: A vibrant, tangy, and sweet sauce that offers a delightful contrast.
- Honey Mustard Sauce: The perfect blend of sweet and savory, a universally loved dipping option.
- BBQ Sauce: Smoky and robust, adding a delicious depth of flavor to each bite.

- Spicy Mayo: For those who love a kick, a simple mix of mayonnaise and sriracha is fantastic.
Beyond these, consider serving them with a fresh green salad for a lighter meal, coleslaw for a southern comfort vibe, or even rice pilaf to create a more substantial dinner.

Storage and Freezing Instructions
Leftovers
Leftover air fryer chicken tenders can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To revive their glorious crispiness and flavor, simply reheat them in your air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for a few minutes until they are thoroughly warmed through and crispy again. Don’t microwave them, as this can make them soggy. Beyond reheating, cooked tenders are also fantastic cold, sliced into pieces, and added to sandwiches, wraps, or as a protein boost for a fresh garden salad.
Freezing
Yes, these homemade chicken tenders are freezer-friendly, making them perfect for meal prepping! Once they are cooked and have cooled completely to room temperature, you can freeze them. Arrange them in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze for about an hour until firm. Then, transfer the frozen tenders to an airtight freezer-safe container or a heavy-duty ziplock bag, ensuring as much air is removed as possible to prevent freezer burn. They can be stored in the freezer for up to 1 month. To reheat from frozen, place them directly in the air fryer and cook at 380°F (190°C) for 8-10 minutes, or until heated through and crispy, flipping halfway.
